Post #5: Tech Topics

 

The two topics that I am interested in from the Tech Topics list are IT careers and Network security. I would like to know more about the different fields in information technology and the job duties that they entail. I would also like to learn more about securing networks and the process of how this is performed.

I am interested in learning more about IT Careers because I think having a better understanding of the different career types will help me solidify which role suits me best. If I know more about the different career fields within information technology, I can narrow down which fields interest me and which ones I would not be interested in. This will be important when choosing a long-term career. One question that I hope to answer by researching this topic in more detail is, which IT career will I enjoy the most, will allow me to perform at my highest capabilities, and will provide me with a decent living wage to support my family comfortably? There are more than 21 different careers in the IT field, with salaries ranging from $47,000 to six figures (Birt, 2025). The answer to my question will be vital in selecting the best field for me.

I am also interested in learning more about Network Security because I think it will help me to become more familiar with the field I believe I want to be in, which is cybersecurity. “Network security is the field of cybersecurity focused on protecting computer networks and systems from internal and external cyberthreats and cyberattacks.” (What is network security?, n.d.) Cybersecurity is network security, so this will be very important for me to learn if this is the IT field that I want to be in. Cybersecurity is a brand-new field for me that I do not know much about. I have watched a lot of YouTube videos about cybersecurity, and it appears to be a field that I would be interested in. Learning network security would be beneficial to excelling in this field. If I can become familiar with the process of network security, this will help to solidify my skills in cybersecurity. Cybersecurity will also play a part in learning IT careers, as there are several fields in cybersecurity alone. “Cybersecurity is the art of protecting networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access or criminal use and the practice of ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.” (What is Cybersecurity?, 2021) There are at least 12 different career paths within the cybersecurity field, with salaries ranging from $69,000 to six figures (Team, 2025). The one question that I hope to answer by researching this topic in more detail is, what are the best actions to take to prevent a cyber-attack? I believe the answer to this question will give me a better understanding of what network security is and what the job duties will entail. The answer will help me to be more confident in the field I have chosen.

There is a lot to explore around the topics of IT careers and network security. All the information will be beneficial for me in the degree program I have chosen. It will be important for me to become familiar with the different roles and responsibilities and know the ins and outs of the job description for the career I chose. I am excited to learn more and develop my skills in technology.
